The Casa Vieja meadow complex is located within the Golden Trout Wilderness in California, accessed by foot or horseback from Blackrock Trailhead. These high elevation meadow systems have been historically mis-managed grazing allotments, and over time the meadows have suffered from stream incision and perimeter drying. As a part of the Kern Plateau Meadows Project, Casa Vieja was one of the first meadows to have “Low-Tech Process Based Restoration” techniques utilized within a designated wilderness area. This meant that all materials, tools, and labor had to be hiked in, or packed in by mule train. No power tools of any kind. It was an excellent initiation into the world of stream restoration. I worked alongside crews from Trout Unlimited and Anabranch Solutions as the first structures were installed. I learned so much from all the practitioners out in the field.
